The “wake” or visitation is a time for family and friends to support one another. Throughout history wakes lasted for days. In some countries there is a one month celebration before burial. A traditional American visitation is the day before the burial. The word “wake” means to “wake” from sleep. In actuality, the wake is an awakening to the reality of death. Honors are given in the transition from life to death.
